Sun Exposure: Full Shade

Plants designated as “Full Shade” are best suited for locations that receive less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, or predominantly dappled sunlight throughout the day (like the light filtering through a tree canopy). These areas might receive some early morning sun or very late evening sun, but they are largely protected from intense, direct rays. Many “Full Shade” plants are native to woodland environments and have adapted to lower light levels. Think of lush foliage plants, ferns, hostas, and certain flowering species that bring color and texture to the darker corners of your garden. It’s important to note that “Full Shade” doesn’t mean “no light” – all plants need some light to photosynthesize, but these prefer it to be indirect or filtered.
